Just Started Training 2009

Here is a bit of background on my competition and lifting experience. I started training approximately 7 years ago, beginning with lifts that were below average at a 50kg bench, 60kg squat and a 90kg deadlift, at 80kg bodyweight. Regardless, with no real previous experience in sports, I immediately became hooked.

u90kg Junior BDFPA

I started competing in u90kg strongman/powerlifting in 2010 and won my first powerlifting competition, which was a BDFPA (British Drug Free Powerlifting Association) event as a junior. In the same year I placed in the top 10 in an u90kg strongman qualifier, before moving up in weight. I managed to pull a triple bodyweight deadlift of 270kg as a junior.

u105kg Winning Bristols Strongest Man Open 2012

Struggling to keep weight down as my body wanted to get bigger, I moved into the u105kg weight class where I pulled a 300kg deadlift at just over 100kg bodyweight. I won Bristol’s strongest man in 2012 (even though it was an open weight class event against some really big guys!) placed 2nd in the Southern Natural Qualifier u105kg and placed in the top 10 at the Britain’s Strongest Natural u105kg event in the same year.

Breaking South West Deadlift Record @130kg bodyweight 2015

After taking some time off from competing in order to get bigger, I returned in 2015 at 130kg and competed in the u140kg BDFPA South West qualifier where I broke the all-time Drug Free South West deadlift record with 302.5kg This also qualified me for the BDFPA Nationals where I went on to compete and became national champion by deadlifting 305kg.

In the same year I moved to a new federation called the BPU (British Powerlifting Union) where I qualified and competed at the nationals, and although injured I managed to deadlift 300kg and bench press 180kg which won the u140kg single lift nationals. This earned me a spot on the British team to compete at the WPC World Championships in Portugal.

WPC World Championship Portugal 2015 with Holly and Josh Cannon

I flew out to Portugal with Holly Ware who was also representing team GB and came joint 3rd in the bench press, moving down to 4th because of bodyweight with a 192.5kg bench and coming 2nd in the deadlift with 320kg, just missing 1st place due to a lift not given on my final attempt at 332.5kg. This would cap off the year of 2015 for me,

Biggest Equipped Deadlift at Bodypower 2016 with 342.5kg

In 2016 I competed on the main powerlifting stage at Bodypower and won the u140kg Single Ply Bench Press with 260kg in my first equipped competition, winning the u140kg deadlift with 342.5kg and pulling the biggest equipped deadlift of the competition.

WPC European Championship 1st Place u140kg (Middle)

I finally went on to compete at the WPC European Championship in the Raw Class u140kg where I squatted 300kg, which was a BPU British Record, Bench pressed 195kg just missing 200kg which also gave me a BPU British Record and finally Deadlifting 342.5kg which gave me an ALL UK Federation deadlift record u140kg and a WPC World Record Deadlift and Total Record. One day later I competed in the Single Ply Bench Press, lifting 240kg which secured1st place.

Over the last 6-7 years I have gone from 80kg to 145kg, gaining a huge 65kg in bodyweight. I have also opened a gym www.kernowgym.com where I have coached people on a daily basis and helped people from all different walks of life to achieve their goals. On the way I have coached multiple members to national and international level success in powerlifting and strongman. Now, I have set myself a new challenge to get back down to u105kg and compete in strongman again. This will require my losing approximately 35kg, of which I have currently lost 20kg (44lb)
